However in the interest of catching tax dodgers, the German Ministry of Finance saw fit to pay a thief, who stole the confidential client data of a Liechtenstein bank, the incredible sum of US$ 6,2 million. In addition, the Ministry of Finance used the German secret service to procure the data disk and to make the payment to the thief, in violation its constitutional charter. Instead of going after the thief in the interest of protecting data, the German Ministry of Finance rewarded the thief. This may now encourage underpaid bank employees in tax havens to follow this unfortunate example. The whole affair has caused a spat between the governments of Liechtentein and Germany, with Germany being accused of stomping all over a small country. Needless to say that Liechtenstein?s reputation as a tax haven and wealth management center is now in tatters, while in Germany the sentiments are not against the government paying the thief, but against the business community in general. Germany appears to be unrepentant and continues to take a tough stance vis-à-vis tax havens such as Liechtenstein, Andorra, Switzerland und Monaco much to their chagrin. Perhaps Germany should return to its virtues of protecting data and not to walk all over its neighbours.
